Garden Update

APRIL

Spring is here in full swing!! Finally. I’m so excited. I get to play outside, and watch my garden grow. This past weekend, while the weather was absolutely gorgeous, I got outside to fix up some of my garden. Then on Monday I hauled over some of the mostly decomposed leaf and lawn compost to cover my garden with before the rain hit. Here’s a look at what the rest of the week holds:

INSIDE
  • Upstairs in my light boxes, I have celery, tomatoes, savory, cumin and I’m trying to rescue my rosemary. Not sure what happened, but this year Rosemary just didn’t want to be inside for the winter. She wilted horribly. It could have been from lack of sun, or too much water, or the shock of being ripped out of the ground. She lost a good 80% of her branches, and I’m hoping she’ll recover. Poor thing.
  • I’ve got some herbs I started up this week: lemon balm (Goomba loves it!), catnip and hyssop started. Just realized that I was supposed to start the marjoram and chamomile by Monday. Oops.

OUTSIDE
  • Our peas started sprouting! Yay. Although, something has been digging in the garden, so I had to cover it with the metal mesh I got for last year’s peas. We’ve only got a half dozen or so coming up, but… the seed saving experiment worked!!

  • The garden beds are set, and here’s what the water jugs for the celery look like.
  • Speaking of the celery, I really should get them outside into the greenhouse shelves. I’d like them in the ground within the next week or so, but they’ve been in the warm, eternal sun of the light boxes, so I don’t want to shock them.

  • My raspberries are still giving me trouble. I’m still not sure how to train them for maximum production and easy harvest. The biggest problem I have is that I didn’t plant these, I discovered them. They grow between the fence and the parking lot, the mulberry and the black walnut.  It’s difficult to make anything work.
  • I’ve got my indoor compost bins still plugging away. I think I’m going to bury the oldest one in the garden and start over. I just hope it doesn’t stink too badly.
  • The carrots need to get planted. They’ll be going into the newer half of the herb garden until the herbs are ready. If it’s possible, I’d like to intersperse them with the onions
  • I should start raking the yard up soon. We didn’t rake in the fall because we weren’t sure if someone was coming by with a leaf blower like they did the year before. Ah well, this will make for some great cardio! Lord knows I could use the exercise.

  • And lastly, in the next week or two, I’ve got to get the wildflowers and calendula seeded. I noticed last year that I didn’t have any beauty in the garden (other than the beauty of fresh grown food), so I started a bed, specifically for flowers. I can’t wait to see how it goes.
What about you? What are you up to in your garden?
