What you’ll need:

  • A container, with lid. (I used an empty cat litter bucket)
  • A handful of soil
  • A drill or hammer and nail, depending on your container material
  • A tray, or a plate, or a second container to catch the liquid in
  • Old shredded newspaper or cardboard
bin making materials

Step One:

Drill holes into the bottom, sides and top of your container. If you plan to use nesting buckets, like we did, drill the side holes into both buckets while they are together.

Look at all the holes!
Make sure when you're done drilling that you empty your buckets of debris.

Step two:

Start by putting your newspaper, or cardboard, and soil in the container.  Starting your compost with a handful of soil helps introduce beneficial organisms to help with decomposition.

Step three:

Layer your bucket with newspaper and scraps, keeping it at a 30:1 ratio. Too many scraps per newspaper will make for a smelly compost. I promise, you don’t want that.
