Seed starting season!!!

It's March and the weather is officially supposed to start getting warmer from here on out.  With any luck, or love from Mother Nature, it'll be planting time before you know it! I get so excited just thinking about it. Getting outside in the sun, putting my hands in dirt, watering, nurturing my plants!!! Spring just cannot come fast enough.

Before I can put my hands into the ground, I need to get my seedlings started. I like to plant from seed for two reasons: 1) it’s much cheaper, and more rewarding; and 2) I can control what plant varieties we grow, and eat. There’s so many ways you can start seeds. Some people use a greenhouse, some a sunny, south facing window, and some, like us, a light box. I came across light boxes in my researching about 4 years ago. The concept is so simple, and the execution easy. Basically, you line a large cardboard box with tinfoil, and stick a light inside.

The first year I tried it, I was surprised at how well it worked. Well, that was until we lost power in the kitchen and I had to move the plants to another location. They all survived, but I have to say, out of sight, out of mind. Even this year, I’ve forgotten to water them. No casualties yet, thank goodness, but we almost lost Goomba’s cabbage plant she got from school.

Next week, I’ve got to plant our tomatoes, cumin and savory. I can’t wait! What are you planting this year? Trying anything new?
