Garden Update

What's up for this week

After that serious cold snap this week (temperature got down to the low teens!) the weather looks like it will cooperate now. I’ve got so much to still get done in the garden. Here’s a look at whats going on:

INSIDE-
  • We’ve got our onions, chives, and celery still plugging away upstairs. Just added some tomatoes, cumin and savory. I’ve never grown cumin or savory, so that should be interesting.

  • Caveman just brought home some boxes for me to make a couple of new light boxes. Yay! So that’s now on the list too.

  • We’ve still got two buckets of compost going, although, I may have overloaded one with too much nitrogen. Oops. Guess I’m not perfect.

OUTSIDE
  • So, it hasn’t been warm enough to actually do any yardwork, but Goomba and I did plant those peas in February. Nothing has sprouted yet, and I actually think Mr. Skunk, who lives under the porch, may have dug them up. I’ll have to check that out.

  • My plan is to get the garden beds ready for plants soon, especially because the onions and celery should be going outside right about now. I’ve got to get the water jugs situated before planting the celery. I read that they are heavy feeders, and even enjoy being flooded every now and then.

  • The raspberries need to be adjusted. In the past few years I’ve tried, unsuccessfully, trellising them. Last fall I decided to give up and try something new. Not sure what exactly, but something different.

  • In the far back there’s a brush pile that I need to turn. There’s some really great decomposed material waiting for me to discover at the bottom. That would make a great amendment to the garden.

That’s about it for this week. There’s more going on with food preservation, but I’ll get to that in another post. For now, enjoy your weekend!!
