New house, new garden

Well, we moved and bought a house. Yay! That also means we have to start fresh with the garden. All the hard work I put into my perennial herbs, and berry patches, left behind. But it’s ok.
Things at the old house were less than ideal. Most of it was me working with what we had. I couldn’t change much. And there were years where someone would come along and unknowingly undo my hard work. One of the downsides to being a caretaker where leadership switched hands more times than you could count.
Regardless, we learned so much from that place, those gardens. But now we have our own place. We can make all of our own decisions and not have to worry someone will come by and change it. I’m actually quite excited.

Even Peanut finds it funny ?
I’ll be honest. I’m not entirely sure if I’ll get to start any seeds this spring. With the need to create a garden space outside, and little Peanut taking up most of my time inside, I’m just not sure there’s enough of me to go around. That’s not to say I won’t have a garden. Oh no. Caveman thought that. HAHAHHAHAH. Clearly he doesn’t know me. Even when Gummy Bear was born I had a garden. I can’t go a year without growing something.

Outside is where the excitement is this month. When we can get out there anyways. It’s been kinda cold, for March. And then it’s been kinda warm for March too. So we get out and get things done while we can.
Currently we’ve been clearing the overgrown patch in the middle of the yard. It’s where I plan to put my garden. Looks like it gets the best sun and isn’t far from the back door or the hose.  We had to take down some larger saplings and small trees, and a TON of invasive bittersweet. Caveman had fun with the chainsaw. There’s still more work to be done. Stumps to grind, more brush to clear out, and the whole area needs a good raking.

In process
We considered tilling the plot, to get all the roots out, but I think we are going to try doing some garden boxes instead. Go for more of a no till, or even lasagna type garden. Make it an experiment this year and decide next year how well it worked. It would be cool to try several different types of gardening (I’ve always wanted to do a hugelkultur mound) and see what works best. That may be an option. We will see how much gets done.
There is just so much around the house that Caveman wants to get done and only so much time (even less with littles).
