JUNE 2018

Inside

  • I think the only thing I have going inside right now is my Aloe Vera. Definitely need to get it in a bigger pot. It has a baby or two that could benefit from a transplant as well.

Outside

  • This spring I planted peas and Caveman made me a trellis. They are quite delicious, but as summer gets closer, and the weather is warming up they are tapering off. I think we'll get one more picking from them before they're done.
  • I also tried my hand with heads of lettuce this spring. Those came out fantastically. We tried three different types. The last one is just now getting big enough. The other two are starting to bolt.

  • Our summer veggie this year is green beans. Caveman built me a nice trellis for those as well. They are climbing like crazy. I hope I planted enough, we love green beans.
  • My herbs are going well as usual. Got my first cuttings of yarrow, lemon balm, sage and mint drying in the bedroom. Caveman thinks I'm nuts for putting them in here, but its currently the only room with a/c and he never opens the curtains (hence the name Caveman), so its always nice and dark. My thyme started to bloom early so I haven't harvested any of that yet. This week I'm hoping to get some oregano into the dehydrator. I typically hang dry it, but its such a pain to tie so many tiny stems together. It'll be nice to have it all done at once.

  • I never did fix my darn raspberries. They are such a mess this year. After we harvest next month I'm going to get them trellised and organized. Even if I have to dig some up. I know it'll mean a year without berries, but this chaos has to stop.  The dewberries out back are coming along. I wasn't sure we were going to get any this year because over the fall a gentleman who thought he was helping pretty much tore the whole patch up. I was devastated, and furious. But, alas, they came back! They refused to go down without a fight.

  • My four little blueberry bushes are still hanging on. I have to thin the iris' around them. They seem to have taken over, practically overtaking one of my bushes. We may get a small harvest this year. I see a few berries on a couple bushes.

  • My strawberries this year were mediocre at best. Caveman started making a protective box for them, but we never finished it so the birds got most of our harvest. I did happen to thin them at the beginning of the season, which probably didn't help. I should've done it at the end of the summer last year, or waited to the end of this summer, but I was so antsy to get into the garden and DO something... Oh well. Live and learn. Next year should be better.
