Since the end of March and practically all of April I was locked out of my blog in a seemingly endless password battle, I’m just going to lump April’s garden update in here with May. Be prepared for lots of pictures.

Inside

  • The fig tree is still inside until we get a bigger pot for it. Smells awful, so it’ll be going out ASAP.
  • Tomatoes peppers and eggplants all still plugging away. They’re not as big as I’d like but I did start them about a month late.

The lovely, but smelly fig. So glad it survived

Cucumber seeds planted!
  • And maybe not an inside per se, but I did start the cucumbers, squash and melons. Three types of cukes, three types of squash and two different melons. They’re inside little mini green houses made from old salad containers out in full sun. So, like I said, not really inside.

OuTside:

  • Outside but not yet in the ground are a few plants I saved from the old house. I took a few cuttings of sage, dug up some bee balm and yarrow, a couple strawberry plants, thyme, rosemary and two celery plants that somehow survived the winter.

Herbs waiting to be put in the ground
  • Garden fence will be going up very soon. I'll share the project as soon as its finished.

Fence posts are cut and ready to go in the ground.
  • My garden beds are coming along, slowly but surely. I was hoping to have a total of 5, plus the cold frame, but I don't think I'm going to get there this year. Three was already more than I had expected to get done.

Still working on cutting the third bed
  • Lettuce all popped up and is growing nicely. Five different kinds and a mix I threw together. Still trying to make the time to get in there to weed and thin.

  • Potatoes got covered for the first time

  • Peas are climbing the branches I put in. This one is kind of an experiment. I started the peas just to have something going. Not sure how well they’ll do in a container, but clearly they don't seem to notice.

  • Discovered we have a black cherry tree next to the willow (glad we waited to cut them down!) It looks to be about 5 years old or so.

Definitely need to clean up the area a bit
  • And a volunteer apple that we will have to save. May or may not move it. It’s roughly in the spot we planned to put more fruit trees, so debating moving it slightly.
  • Also- a Guelder-Rose bush. A rather big one at that. We only kept it because it had a nice shape for the kids to play in. The fruit is supposed to be slightly acidic but good for making jams, 😁

Nearly a 15ft bush!

What the berries will look like
  • The raspberries are doing great. They’re volunteers too, I think. They’re mostly growing under the far pear tree, so I’m not sure if they popped up or if someone planted them.
  • Speaking of the pear trees, they both bloomed beautifully. Almost all the pretty white flowers have fallen off. I’m so anxious to see how well they produce. Rumor has it they get quite a bit of fruit! 😍
